POPULATION RESEARCH INTEREST GROUP GRADUATE STUDENT PAPER AWARD
 
The Population Research Interest Group of the Rural Sociological Society is soliciting submissions for a graduate student paper award in the areas of rural demography and population studies. The paper should be related to the broad interests of the Population Research Interest Group. Current graduate students and recent graduates (who received their degrees no earlier than May 2015) may apply. Coauthored papers are acceptable as long as all of the authors were students at the time the paper was written and submitted. The recipient will receive a monetary prize of at least $200 (final budget is still TBD) that will help to defray part of the cost of registering for and attending the 2016 RSS Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada (August 7-10, 2016). The recipient will also be recognized at the Population Research Interest Group business meeting. To be considered for this award, there is a two-step process: 1) Submit an abstract to present the paper at the annual meeting of the Rural Sociological Society (online registration is open and will continue until Feb 5, 2016); 2) Send an electronic copy of the full paper with contact information to the RIG co-chair Jessica Ulrich-Schad (jessica.schad@sdstate.edu) by May 1, 2016. The paper submission should not exceed 35 double-spaced pages (including all tables, graphs, and references) in a standard font (12 point). The winner we be selected by a committee of RIG members and receive their award at the annual meeting. The winner will be notified via email by July 1, 2016.

The Natural Resources Research Interest Group (NRRIG) of the Rural Sociological Society is soliciting submissions for a graduate student paper award in the areas of environmental or natural resources social science. The paper should be related to the broad interests of the NRRIG. Current graduate students and recent graduates (who received their degrees no earlier than May 2015) may apply. Coauthored papers are acceptable as long as all of the authors were students at the time the paper was written and submitted. The recipient will receive a monetary prize of at least $100 (final budget TBD) that will help to defray part of the cost of registering for and attending the 2016 RSS Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada (August 7-10, 2016). The recipient will also be recognized at the NRRIG business meeting. To be considered for this award students must be members of the Rural Sociological Society. Papers will be evaluated using the following criteria:

1. Advancement of knowledge 2. Significance of the topic for the NRRG of the Rural Sociological Society 3. Quality and implementation of the research, theory, and argument (as applicable).

4. Analysis and interpretation of the findings (if applicable).

5. Clarity and organization of the writing. (Criteria listed in order of importance/weight)


Graduate Student Poster Award

Coauthored posters are acceptable as long as all of the authors were students at the time the paper was written and submitted. The recipient will receive a monetary prize of $50 that will help to defray part of the cost of registering for and attending the 2016 RSS Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada (August 7-10, 2016). The recipient will also be recognized at the NRRIG business meeting. To be considered for this award students must be members of the Rural Sociological Society. There is a two-step process for submission: 1) Submit an abstract to present the poster at the annual meeting of the Rural Sociological Society (
online registration is open and will continue until Feb 5, 2016); 2) Send an email to the NRRG chair (Jessica Ulrich-Schad: jessica.schad@sdstate.edu) by August 1, 2016 informing us of your participation in the poster session in the conference. Posters will be judged by a committee of NRRIG members at the meeting during the scheduled poster session.

Graduate Student Travel Scholarship
Please encourage graduate students to compete for the second annual William R. Freudenburg Graduate Student Travel Scholarship. The recipient will be reimbursed for the student (member) registration cost for the RSS annual meeting. Graduate students who enter must be current RSS members and must have a paper or poster accepted to the 2015 RSS meeting with a natural resource sociological topic.

We invite you to explore rural social class and a wide variety of other topics at our 2016 meeting. RSS encourages a variety of rural practitioners and disciplines to attend. Join us in Toronto. And remember you will need your passport.

Abstracts:
Abstracts should be approximately 350-500 words and briefly outline the purpose and theoretical framing of the paper, poster, program, or organized session. Include methods and date used, and preliminary (if available) or expected findings.
