Mark your calendars! There are a number of upcoming conferences of note for those interested in cutting edge research on natural resource development and management:
Join impact assessment professionals from around the world this spring at the IAIA’s annual conference in Japan. IAIA16: Resilience and Sustainability takes place May 11-14 at the Nagoya Congress Center in Aichi-Nagoya. A strong focus for the event is “resilience”, one of the most important global keywords in the 21st Century. Conference goers can expect a number of topics to be covered that connect to their work in the field of natural resource development and management, including:
- Agriculture, forestry and fisheries
- Biodiversity and ecology
- Corporate stewardship and risk management
- Energy: Oil, gas and renewable fuels
- Energy: Power generation and transmission
- Environmental Impact Assessment
- Public participation & social impact assessment

Then join sociologists and other social scientists August 10 – 14, 2016 in Toronto, Canada for the XIV World Congress of Rural Sociology. The IRSA Congress will be held at Ryerson University and the theme is Sustainable and Just Rural Transitions: Connections and Complexities. Congress sessions will address rural concerns and identify, analyze and assess the forms and consequences of the diverse transition aspirations and experiences of rural people and places. Sessions of note for natural resource researchers and practitioners include:
- Seed systems and intellectual property
- Neo-productivism in agriculture
- Land grabs and concentration of land
- Water security & politics
- Indigenous knowledge and innovation
